SONGWRITING

One day it hit me. Bad songs with great production were still bad so songs. I had to learn how to write great, or at least good, songs. So I started writing. Mostly as an exercise at first. Now I write because I have to. Songs about my life and faith. Songs about success and mistakes. See there, I rhymed. Maybe I'm getting the hang of this?

PRODUCTION/ENGINEERING

I help you bring your songs to life. We'll make sure you're saying something interesting. Then we'll make sure the music fits. If it needs a kazoo, then we add kazoo. If it needs a full orchestra, and your rich, then we add a full orchestra. Every song and every project is different, and I treat them as such. It's a beautiful thing when it all comes together. Music matters. I take it seriously.

MIXING

I mix most of the projects I produce, and nowadays I'm mixing quite a few projects recorded by other artists and producers. I think I like it so much because it combines the technical with the creative. I speak geek and I speak artist. I'm an old man now, 32 to be exact, so I have a decade of experience at both, which helps (I know I'm not old, but I'm probably older than you). Basically, mixing is about finding that thing that makes a song go, then doing everything in my power to communicate that thing. And, for the people that care, I have lots of the plug-ins and outboard gear that all the people on websites and in the magazines say that I must have to make stuff sound good.

INSTRUMENTATION

I started playing the acoustic guitar when I was 13. Fingerstyle guitar to be exact. Now I strum a little harder and can often be seen playing the kind of guitars that get plugged into pedals and amps. Before my musician friends came along I had to learn how to fake pianos and drums and such. I have a mandolin that sits in the corner of my room that never gets played. And, oh yeah, I made a living for a couple of years playing the bass guitar.
